Sa mesa longa

Sa Mesa Longa is a surf spot on the northwest coast of Sardinia, Italy, near the area of San Vero Milis / Oristano. It’s one of Sardinia’s better-known beachbreaks, exposed to Mediterranean swell and most consistent in the colder, stormier months.

What it’s like

• Type: Sandy beach break
• Wave quality: Can be fun and punchy when conditions line up, but it’s usually more of a wind- and swell-dependent spot than a perfectly groomed point
• Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers when small to moderate; more experienced surfers when it gets bigger and hollower
• Bottom: Sand, so it tends to be more forgiving than reef spots

Conditions

• Best swell direction: Typically works best with west / northwest swell
• Best wind: Usually easterly offshore winds or light wind
• Season: More reliable in autumn, winter, and early spring
• Water temperature: Mild compared with northern Europe, but a wetsuit is still needed in cooler months

• Can get busy when conditions are good, but it generally has a relaxed Sardinian atmosphere
• Because it’s a beachbreak, the peaks can shift around depending on sandbars and tides
