Porto Paglia

Porto Paglia is a surf spot on the southwest coast of Sardinia, Italy — not Sicily. It sits near the town of Gonnesa, in the Carbonia-Iglesias area, facing the open Mediterranean/Atlantic swell window that gives Sardinia some of the best surf in Italy.

Spot description

• Type: Beach break with some sandbank variation
• Exposure: Very exposed to swell, especially from W to SW
• Best conditions:
• Medium to large W/SW swell
• Light offshore winds from the east or northeast
• Tide: Usually works best at mid tide, but sandbanks can change things
• Wave quality: Can produce fast, fun, hollow sections when conditions line up
• Crowd level: Can be popular when the surf is on, but generally less crowded than many mainland European spots

Porto Paglia can deliver powerful beachbreak waves over a sandy bottom, with occasional heavier sets. It’s the kind of spot that can be mushy and forgiving on smaller days but become wedgey, punchy, and more challenging when the swell rises.

• Beginners when the surf is small and manageable
• Bodyboarders too, especially when the waves are steeper
