Chia (Sardinia, Italy) is one of the best-known surf and wind sports areas in Italy, located on the southwest coast of Sardinia near Domus de Maria. It’s not in Sicily.

Spot overview

  • Wave type: Mostly beach breaks and sandbank setups
  • Best wind: Offshore winds from the north / northwest
  • Best swell: South and southwest swell
  • Skill level: Good for intermediate surfers, but can also work for beginners on smaller days

What it’s like

Chia is known for: - Clean turquoise water - Long sandy beaches - Several different peaks along the coast - A very scenic setting with dunes, lagoons, and islets

Because the bottom is mostly sand, conditions can change with swell and sand movement, which means the breaks can be very different from one day to the next.

Conditions

  • On small to medium swells, Chia can be playful and manageable.
  • On bigger south-west swells, it can get more powerful and hollow in some sections.
  • Wind can make or break it—light offshore or calm conditions are ideal.

Other notes

  • Chia is also popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
  • In summer, it can be crowded with beachgoers, but surf conditions are often better in autumn, winter, and spring.
