Banzai is one of the better-known surf breaks on the Lazio coast, just north of Rome near Santa Marinella. It’s a popular mainland Italian spot that can deliver surprisingly good surf when Mediterranean swells line up, especially during autumn and winter.

Spot character

• Type: Mostly a reef/rocky point-style break with multiple takeoff sections depending on conditions
• Best direction: Works best with NW to W/NW swells
• Wind: Offshore or light E/NE winds are ideal
• Tide: Often prefers mid to lower tide, but it can vary with the section and swell size

Wave quality

When it’s on, Banzai can produce fast, clean, powerful waves that are among the most consistent in central Italy. It can offer long rides on good swells, but the wave can also be quick and hollow, especially when the swell is solid.
