Coumeenole

Coumeenole, Ireland (South West) is one of the most famous surf spots on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, known for its dramatic scenery and powerful Atlantic exposure.

Wave characteristics

Coumeenole can produce heavy, steep waves that break with a lot of power, especially when a solid Atlantic swell lines up. The waves can offer long walls and barrels on the right day, but the spot is generally considered advanced to expert level because of its strength, shifting conditions, and raw energy.

Conditions

• Best tide: Often mid to low tide, depending on swell size and sand/reef setup
• Swell direction: Works best with W–SW swell, though it can pick up a wide range of Atlantic energy
• Hazards: Strong currents, heavy shorebreak, shallow sections, and rocky areas nearby
• Water temperature: Cold year-round; a thick wetsuit is essential

When it works

The spot really comes alive in autumn and winter, when Atlantic storm systems send in larger, cleaner swells. Summer can still produce surf, but it is usually smaller and less consistent.

Atmosphere

Coumeenole is as much about the setting as the surf: steep cliffs, open ocean, and a wild, isolated feel. It’s a highly scenic and atmospheric wave, but also unforgiving when the sea gets big.
