Portrush

Portrush is one of Northern Ireland’s best-known surf towns, with a mix of beach breaks and reef/point options depending on swell direction and tide. The North East and East-facing spots here are generally more sheltered than the west-facing Atlantic coasts, so they can work well when the bigger north and northwest swells are too raw elsewhere. Expect clean, organized waves on the right conditions, especially with lighter offshore winds.

These breaks tend to be best on medium to larger swells from the north through east sectors, with the exact quality depending heavily on sand movement, tide stage, and wind direction. The area can produce fun, punchy waves when everything lines up, but it’s also exposed enough to pick up strong winds and local chop when the forecast is messy.

Best for: intermediate to advanced surfers, though some days may be suitable for progressing beginners at softer beach sections.
