Back Beach is a solid exposed beach break on Ireland’s east-facing coastline, known for picking up swell well when conditions line up. It tends to work best on north to east swell, with west or southwest winds keeping the surf cleaner. The wave is usually a mix of fast, peaky beach-break sections and the occasional longer-running shoulder, so it can be fun for both high-energy shortboard sessions and more relaxed cruising when it’s smaller.

Because it’s a beach break, the sandbanks can shift, so the wave shape changes with tides and seasons. Expect the spot to be most reliable around mid tide, though local sand movement can make low or high tide better at times. On bigger swells it can get powerful and hollow, but in average conditions it’s more approachable and playful.

The beach is generally suited to intermediate surfers and up, though smaller days can be good for beginners if the conditions are mellow. As with many exposed Irish east-coast spots, it can get affected by wind and tide quickly, so checking the forecast before heading down is a good idea.
