Periscopes, Sumbawa (Indonesia) is a powerful, high-performance reef break known for its fast, hollow waves and exposed setting. It’s one of those spots that can deliver world-class barrels when the swell, wind, and tide line up—but it’s not for the casual surfer.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Fast, heavy reef break
• Best for: Experienced surfers, especially those comfortable in critical, shallow-water waves
• Main attraction: Long, hollow sections and punchy barrels
• Crowd: Usually lighter than more famous Indonesian spots, but it still draws serious surfers when it’s on

Conditions

• Swell: Works best on solid southwest swell
• Wind: Offshore winds help keep the wave clean and lined up
• Tide: Often tide-sensitive; too much or too little water can make it difficult or dangerous
• Bottom: Sharp reef, so positioning and timing matter a lot

Vibe

Periscopes has a more raw, exposed feel compared with some of the more user-friendly breaks in Indonesia. When it’s firing, it can look incredibly inviting, but the wave is unforgiving and demands commitment.
