Bono

Bono is one of Indonesia’s most famous and unusual surf destinations, located on the Musi/Indragiri river system in mainland Sumatra. It’s not an ocean reef or beach break—instead, it’s a powerful tidal bore that travels upriver as a long, rideable standing wave.

What it’s like

• Wave shape: A fast-moving, often long and powerful wave that can form multiple sections
• Best for: Very experienced surfers only

Hazards

Bono is extremely dangerous compared with normal surf spots.
