Serangan, Bali, Indonesia — surf spot description

Serangan is a semi-protected reef break just off the southeastern side of Bali, near Denpasar. It sits on the edge of a small island area connected to the mainland, which helps it hold cleaner waves than many more exposed spots nearby when the conditions line up.

Wave character

  • Type: Reef break
  • Direction: Works best on swell from the south to southwest
  • Shape: Can offer long, peeling right-handers and, on some swell directions, lefts as well
  • Quality: When it’s on, Serangan can be a fun, rippable wave with decent length and sectioning for maneuvers

Conditions

  • Best wind: East to northeast offshore winds
  • Best tide: Usually mid to higher tide is more forgiving; low tide can be shallow and sectiony
  • Swell size: Best with medium to larger swells; too small and it may lose power
  • Protection: Somewhat sheltered compared with open-ocean reef breaks, so it can be a solid option when other east-side spots are messy

Level

  • Skill level: Best for intermediate to advanced surfers
  • The reef can be shallow and the takeoff can be critical, so beginners should be cautious.

Hazards

  • Sharp reef and shallow sections
  • Can have strong currents depending on swell and tide
  • Crowds can build when it’s working

Vibe

Serangan tends to be a more mellow, less hectic alternative to some of Bali’s better-known breaks, but it still rewards surfers who know how to read reef setups and handle a more technical takeoff.
