Padang Padang is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, located on the Bukit Peninsula near Uluwatu. It’s known for its powerful, fast left-hand reef break and its iconic setting—accessed by a narrow staircase through a cave-like opening in the cliffs.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Left-hand reef break
• Best for: Experienced surfers
• Main features: Hollow, barreling sections, steep takeoff, shallow reef
• Consistency: Can be very consistent, especially during the dry season

Conditions

• Best swell direction: Southwest swell
• Best wind: East / offshore wind
• Best season: April to October, during Bali’s dry season
• Tide: Works best on mid to low tide, but the reef is very shallow, so timing matters a lot

Skill level

Padang Padang is generally not beginner-friendly. It’s powerful and dangerous, with a shallow reef that can produce heavy wipeouts. It’s ideal for advanced surfers who are comfortable in steep, critical waves.

Why it’s famous

• It hosted major international surf competitions, including parts of the World Surf League events.
• It’s often called the “Balinese Pipeline” because of its quality barrels.
• The beach itself is beautiful and photogenic, with clear water and dramatic limestone cliffs.

Other notes

There is also a smaller, more user-friendly wave nearby often called “Baby Padang”, which is better for intermediate surfers and beginners on smaller days.
