Ketewel

Ketewel, Bali (Indonesia) is a mellow, often overlooked surf zone on Bali’s southeast coast, just north of Sanur and east of Denpasar. It’s known more as a quiet local beach area than a famous destination break, but it can offer fun waves when the conditions line up.

Surf character

• Type: Mostly reef and beachbreak/reef-fringe setups depending on the exact stretch
• Wave quality: Can be decent, but usually less consistent than Bali’s headline spots
• Best for: Intermediate surfers and locals who know the area
• Crowds: Typically light compared with Canggu, Uluwatu, or Kuta

Conditions

• Best swell: Southwest swells can wrap in, though exposure is more limited than on Bali’s west/southwest coast
• Wind: Often better in the early morning before onshore winds pick up
• Tides: Tide sensitivity depends on the specific section of coast; some areas are shallow and better on mid tide
• Season: Bali’s dry season generally brings cleaner conditions, but Ketewel is not a super reliable year-round surf magnet

What it’s like

Ketewel is generally a laid-back, less commercialized coastal area with a more local feel. The surf there is not usually the main draw, but that can be a plus if you want fewer people and a calmer atmosphere. When it’s working, expect fun but less polished waves, and be mindful of shallow reef/rocks in some spots.

• Not a beginner-friendly “safe” surf school zone unless conditions are very small and sandy
• Check local knowledge carefully before paddling out
