Tai Long Wan on Lantau Island is one of Hong Kong’s more scenic and surfable beaches, known for its long sandy arc, clear water, and open exposure to swell. It’s a relatively remote spot compared with the city beaches, which gives it a more relaxed, natural feel and usually fewer crowds.

Surf conditions

Best on southerly to southwesterly swells
Works best with tropical systems / typhoon swells and larger seasonal groundswell
Wave quality: can be quite good for Hong Kong standards when conditions line up, with clean peeling rights and lefts depending on sandbars
Beach break: shifting sand means the peaks change over time

Wind and timing

Best with offshore or light winds, often early morning before the sea breeze builds
Tide sensitivity: can vary, but mid-tide is often a safer starting point for beach breaks
Season: late spring through autumn tends to be the most active period for surf in Hong Kong

Atmosphere
