Stalos

Stalos, Crete (Greece) is a beach break on the north coast of Crete, just west of Chania. It’s better known as a relaxed holiday beach than a hardcore surf destination, but it can produce fun wind-driven waves when the right northerly swell hits.

Surf profile

• Type: Mostly beach break
• Wave quality: Generally small to moderate, often short and playful
• Best conditions: Northerly swell with light offshore or cross-offshore winds
• Swell exposure: Exposed enough to pick up north/northwest Mediterranean swell, but not a consistent big-wave spot
• Bottom: Sand, so conditions can change quickly with storms and sand movement

What it’s good for

• Beginners and intermediates when the waves are manageable
• Fun summer/fall sessions if wind and swell align
• Longboard, SUP, and soft-top surfing on smaller days

Limitations

• Can be inconsistent
• Strong onshore winds are common, which can make it choppy
• Often better suited to windsurfing/kitesurfing than pure surfing
• Wave size is usually modest, so advanced surfers may find it limited

Local feel

Stalos has a laid-back, tourist-friendly beach atmosphere with easy access from Chania. It’s convenient rather than remote, and surf sessions are often mixed with swimming, beachgoers, and seasonal activity.

Best time of year

• Autumn to winter generally offers the best chance of surfable swell
• Summer is usually smaller, though wind and storm systems can still create rideable waves
