Kalyves is a scenic beach town on the north coast of Crete, known more for its relaxed holiday vibe than for big, consistent surf. The main beach faces the Cretan Sea and is exposed to northerly and northwesterly swells, which can create small to moderate waves when conditions line up. It’s generally better for beginners, longboarders, and foil/windswell sessions than for advanced surfers looking for powerful reef breaks.

The spot is typically sandy, with a fairly mellow setup and plenty of space, though wave quality can be affected by wind and chop, which are common in the area. Best sessions usually come during autumn and winter, when Mediterranean storm activity brings more reliable swell. Summer is often flatter, but the area can still be good for paddle, SUP, or swimming.

Kalyves itself is a charming village with easy access, tavernas, and a laid-back atmosphere, making it a pleasant base for a surf trip in Crete. It’s not a world-class surf destination, but it can be a fun and scenic stop when the conditions are right.
