Timmendorfer Strand is a popular seaside resort on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast, just north of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein. It’s better known for its beach-town atmosphere than as a classic heavy-wave surf destination, but it can offer fun sessions for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and occasional surfable waves when wind and storm conditions line up.
Surf conditions
- Best for: beginner to intermediate wave riders, SUP, windsurfing, kitesurfing
- Wave quality: usually small to moderate, often wind-driven and choppy rather than clean point-break style
- Best swell/wind: stronger northerly or easterly winds and storm systems in the Baltic
- Water temperature: cool for much of the year, so a wetsuit is typically needed
Spot character
- Beach type: wide sandy beach with easy access
- Crowds: can be busy in summer because it’s a major holiday destination
- Vibe: relaxed resort town with restaurants, promenades, and lots of beach activity
- Hazards: changing sandbanks, wind chop, and busy recreational beach use in season
Good to know
Timmendorfer Strand is more of a multi-sport Baltic beach spot than a dedicated surfing mecca. If you’re looking for consistent, clean surf, conditions can be limited; but for a coastal trip with flexible water sports options, it’s a good choice.
