Helgoland

Helgoland, Germany is an offshore surf spot in the North Sea, best known for its exposed reef/point-style wave setup around the island of Heligoland (Helgoland). It’s a remote, rugged location with powerful, cold-water surf and a very changeable swell window.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly reef and island-exposed breaks, with waves shaped by the island’s rocky coastline.
• Swell: Best on North/Northwest swell, with some spots also responding to Westerly systems.
• Wind: Generally works best with lighter winds, especially offshore or cross-offshore conditions from the east/southeast depending on the exact break.
• Wave quality: Can produce surprisingly good, clean waves when the swell aligns, but it’s highly tide- and wind-sensitive.

Conditions

• Water temperature: Cold year-round.
• Wetsuit: Usually 4/3 mm in warmer months; 5/4 mm or thicker, plus boots, gloves, and hood in winter.
• Crowd: Typically low due to the island’s isolation and travel logistics.
