Sapinus

Sapinus is a well-known reef break on the west side of Tahiti, near Papeete, in French Polynesia. It’s a scenic tropical setup with clear water, volcanic coastline, and a long reef shelf that helps produce clean, hollow waves when conditions line up.

• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
• Breaks: Usually a fast, hollow left with some sections that can get very powerful
• Wave quality: Can be excellent on the right swell, with clean lines and good shape
• Power: Often punchy and heavy, especially at larger sizes

Conditions

• Best swell: South and southwest swells tend to work well
• Best wind: Light offshore or calm conditions are ideal
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive; many reef breaks in Tahiti work best around mid tide, though this can vary by swell
• Consistency: More reliable during the main swell season, but quality depends heavily on wind and swell direction

Environment

• Setting: Tropical lagoon and reef environment with turquoise water and dramatic island scenery
• Water: Warm year-round, so a rash guard or thin spring suit is usually enough
• Hazards: Sharp reef, shallow sections, and strong waves mean it can be unforgiving

Vibe

Sapinus is often appreciated for its beautiful location and high-quality surf, but it’s not a beginner spot. When it’s working, it can offer long, exciting rides with that classic Tahiti reef-break feel.
