Maraa

Maraa is a surf spot on the west coast of Tahiti, in French Polynesia, near the village of Paea/Māraa. It’s part of Tahiti’s reef-and-lagoon coastline, so the break is typically a reef break with waves that form over shallow coral structure.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef break
• Best conditions: Usually works best with a solid southerly to southwesterly swell and favorable winds, often when the wind is light or offshore
• Wave quality: Can offer fun, clean walls when the conditions line up, though it’s generally less famous and less consistent than Tahiti’s world-class spots like Teahupo’o
• Difficulty: Can be intermediate to advanced, mainly because of the reef and the power of South Pacific swells

Surf character

Maraa is known more as a local, scenic reef break than a major international destination. When it’s on, it can produce fast, playful, hollow sections depending on swell size and tide. Like many Tahitian reef breaks, it can be shallow and unforgiving, so reef knowledge is important.
