La Fayette

La Fayette is one of Tahiti’s most famous and heavy reef passes, located on the island’s south coast near Papeete in French Polynesia. It’s known for producing powerful, hollow right-hand waves that break over a shallow reef, making it a classic advanced-to-expert surf spot rather than a casual longboard wave.

What it’s like

• Main direction: Mostly right-hand point/reef-style wave
• Character: Fast, steep, and often barrelly
• Best for: Experienced surfers comfortable with sharp coral, shallow water, and strong hold-downs
• Best swell: Works best with consistent southwest to south swells
• Wind: Typically prefers light offshore winds from the north/northeast

Conditions and hazards

La Fayette is beautiful but serious. The reef is very shallow, and wipeouts can be dangerous due to: - exposed coral reef - heavy wave energy - strong currents and channel flow - limited margin for error on bigger days

Because of this, it’s not considered a beginner-friendly wave.

Crowd and vibe

Since it’s close to the capital and relatively well-known, La Fayette can be crowded when conditions are good. The atmosphere is usually respectful but competitive, especially when the wave is firing.

The spot sits in a stunning tropical setting with turquoise water, volcanic island scenery, and reef flats typical of Tahiti. The contrast between the beauty of the lagoon and the raw power of the break is part of what makes it so iconic.
