Teavapiti

Teavapiti is a reef pass surf spot in the Raiatea–Taha’a area of French Polynesia, in the Society Islands. It’s one of the more well-known waves in the region, offering a clean tropical reef-break setup with long, blue-water lines when conditions line up.

What it’s like

• Type of wave: Reef pass / reef break
• Setup: Breaks over a shallow coral reef near a channel/pass
• Wave shape: Can be fast, hollow, and powerful, with room for maneuvers on better days
• Skill level: Best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, especially because of the reef and the need to read the takeoff correctly

Conditions

• Best swells: Generally works on south or southwest swells depending on the reef orientation and season
• Wind: Cleanest with light trade winds or favorable offshore winds
• Tide: Often tide-sensitive; reef passes can improve at mid tide, but the exact sweet spot depends on the day
• Size: Can be fun at moderate size and gets more critical as it grows

Hazards

• Shallow coral reef with limited margin for error
• Strong currents can be present in and around the pass
• Crowds/local etiquette: As with many Polynesian reef breaks, respect for locals and lineup etiquette is important
