Temae

Temae (Moorea, French Polynesia) is a scenic reef break on the northeastern side of Moorea, right by Temae beach and the airport area. It’s known more for its beautiful setting and clear lagoon than for heavy power, but when conditions line up it can offer fun, clean waves over shallow coral.

Surf characteristics

• Type: Reef break / lagoon pass-style waves
• Wave quality: Can be very good on the right swell, especially with offshore trade winds
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on size and reef exposure
• Direction: Works best with certain east to southeast swells
• Wind: Usually prefers light offshore winds from the west or southwest

What it’s like

• Expect turquoise water, coral heads, and a shallow reef bottom
• Waves can be fast and hollow, but less consistently powerful than more exposed reef passes
• Conditions are often tide-sensitive, with low tide making the reef more dangerous
• Crowds are generally lighter than at well-known Tahiti breaks, but local etiquette still matters
