Papetoai

Papetoai, Moorea (French Polynesia) is a scenic reef pass / reef-break area on the northwest coast of Moorea, near the village of Papetoai. It’s set in a classic tropical lagoon environment with clear turquoise water, lush green volcanic hills, and a fringing reef exposed to South Pacific swell.

• Type: Reef break, with waves breaking over shallow coral/reef structures
• Wave quality: Can be very clean and fast when swell and wind align
• Best conditions: Usually works best with a south to southwest swell and light offshore or glassy winds
• Skill level: Generally more suited to intermediate to advanced surfers because of the shallow reef and potential for powerful waves

What it feels like

Papetoai often has that classic French Polynesian setup: beautiful scenery, warm water, and punchy reef waves. When it’s on, the wave can offer long, drawling walls or fast sections depending on the swell direction and reef shape. Because it’s a reef spot, timing and positioning matter a lot.
