Haapiti

Haapiti (Moorea, French Polynesia) is one of Moorea’s best-known surf zones, located on the island’s western side. It’s a scenic tropical reef break with crystal-clear water, dramatic mountain views, and a laid-back Tahitian atmosphere.

What it’s like

• Type of break: Mostly a reef break over coral/reef structure
• Wave quality: Can produce clean, fast, hollow, and sometimes powerful waves
• Best conditions: Typically works best with southeast to southwest swells and favorable winds
• Skill level: Often best for intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when the waves get bigger and more critical

Spot character

Haapiti is known for having a long, playful reef section on smaller days and more serious, barreling sections when the swell rises. Because it’s a reef break, wave shape can be very fun but also demanding and shallow in places.

Things to know

• Reef and coral hazards: Sharp reef makes wipeouts and low-tide surfing more dangerous
• Tide sensitivity: Conditions can change a lot with the tide; some sections may work better mid to high tide
• Crowds/local respect: Like many quality surf spots in Polynesia, it’s important to respect local surfers and the lineup

Setting

The area is very lush and beautiful, with turquoise lagoon water and mountain backdrops—one of the most picturesque surf locations in the South Pacific.
