Cook bay left

Cook Bay Left is a surf spot on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia, on the west/northwest side of the island in Cook’s Bay. It’s generally a left-hand reef break that can offer fast, hollow waves when the swell and wind align.

Because it’s in a bay, the spot may be more protected from some open-ocean conditions, but that also means it depends a lot on the exact swell direction.

Things to keep in mind

• Reef bottom: Be prepared for shallow reef at lower tide
• Crowds/local etiquette: As with many good reef breaks in Polynesia, respect for local surfers and lineup etiquette is important
• Tide sensitivity: Can change a lot with tide; some tides may make it too shallow or weak
• Hazards: Sharp reef, strong currents at times, and potentially heavy water on bigger swells
