Berneval

Berneval (Normandy, France) is a rugged North Sea surf spot on the Alabaster Coast, just east of Dieppe. It’s a wind- and swell-exposed beachbreak/reef-affected zone that can produce fun waves when a good northwest to north swell lines up with offshore or light offshore winds.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a beachbreak with some local shaping from rocks and headlands.
• Best swells: NW–N swells tend to work well; smaller west swells can also show if conditions are right.
• Wind: Offshore E/SE winds are generally best; stronger winds can make it messy quickly.
• Tide: Often sensitive to tide; many sessions are better around mid tide rather than dead low, depending on sand movement.

Conditions

• Can be punchy and hollow on the right swell, but often shorter-period and more powerful than graceful.
• Because it’s in a cool, storm-exposed part of the Channel, conditions change fast and can be inconsistent.
• Best on clean, well-organized swell; otherwise it can be bumpy and close out.

Crowd and vibe

• Usually less crowded than France’s more famous Atlantic surf zones.
• Mostly a local/hidden gem feel, with surfers checking it when nearby beaches are flat or blown out.
• Access and safety can vary with tide and rock exposure, so it’s worth checking the spot on arrival.

Best for

• Intermediate to advanced surfers
• Anyone comfortable surf-checking and adapting to changing sandbars and rock features
• Shortboarders when it’s solid; bigger boards can help on smaller days
