Berck sur mer

Berck-sur-Mer is a well-known beachbreak on the north coast of France, on the English Channel side, near the border of Normandy and Hauts-de-France (it’s often associated with the Opal Coast rather than Normandy proper).

Surf style

• Beachbreak with shifting sandbanks
• Can offer fun, punchy waves and occasional longer walls when the banks line up
• Works best with clean swells and favorable wind direction
• Waves are usually more consistent in autumn and winter, when Atlantic storm systems send solid swell

Conditions

• Best on a mid to rising tide depending on the sandbars
• Handles a variety of swell directions, but quality depends heavily on the sandbanks
• Can get quite powerful in bigger swells, especially for a beachbreak

Crowd and vibe

• Popular with local surfers and weekend visitors
• Wide beach means it can spread out, but the best peaks can still attract crowds when it’s firing
• Generally a relaxed, classic French beach surf atmosphere

Best for

• Beginner to intermediate surfers on smaller days
• Intermediate to advanced surfers when the swell picks up
• Also a good spot for bodyboarding thanks to the steep, hollow sections that can form

Things to know

• Tides are important, and conditions can change quickly
• Wind can make it messy fast, so offshore or light winds are ideal
• Water is cold much of the year, so a good wetsuit is essential
