Six fours

Six-Fours-les-Plages on the French Mediterranean coast is a wind-and-wave spot more than a classic ocean surf destination. It’s in the Var region, near Toulon, and gets its best surf when Mediterranean low-pressure systems or strong local winds line up with a good swell.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly short-period, wind-generated beachbreaks
• Consistency: Inconsistent compared with Atlantic France; it needs the right swell and wind combo
• Best conditions: Usually autumn and winter, when Mediterranean storms are more likely
• Wind: Can be tricky; light offshore or calm mornings are best before the sea breeze kicks in

Break characteristics

• Bottom: Predominantly sandy beaches, so peaks can shift around
• Wave quality: Usually fun and mellow, but rarely long, powerful surf
• Crowds: Can be localized when conditions turn on, especially since good days are relatively rare

Good for

• Beginner to intermediate surfers on smaller, softer days
• Shortboard, fish, or small-wave board on average days
• Windsurfers and kitesurfers often also frequent the area because of the wind exposure

Watch out for

• Rapidly changing conditions
• Choppy water and gusty onshore winds
• Limited swell windows compared with Atlantic spots

Overall

Six-Fours is a nice Mediterranean backup spot with scenic surroundings and occasional fun beachbreak surf, but it’s not a highly reliable surf destination. When it works, it’s usually small-to-medium and playful, rather than big or powerful.
