Ondres-Plage

Ondres-Plage is a beach break on the southwest coast of France, in Landes, just north of the better-known surf areas around Hossegor and Capbreton. It’s a wide Atlantic beach with a natural, open-ocean feel and a more relaxed atmosphere than the heavyweight reef or sandbar spots farther south.

Surf character

• Type: Beach break
• Wave quality: Can be fun and punchy, especially when sandbanks line up well
• Best conditions: Typically works best on a mid to rising tide with a solid west to northwest swell and light offshore easterly winds
• Wave style: Often produces short, sectiony peaks rather than long, perfectly groomed waves, but it can deliver good shape after storms and when the banks are in place

What to expect

• Beginners: Can be surfed in smaller conditions, but Atlantic surf here can become powerful quickly
• Intermediates: Probably the best fit, especially on clean days
• Advanced surfers: Can still be rewarding when bigger swell lights up the beach and the peaks are hollow or fast

Spot atmosphere

• Crowds: Usually lighter than the main Landes hotspots, though summer and good swell days can still draw plenty of surfers
• Setting: Long sandy beach, dunes, and a classic Landes pine-forest backdrop
• Access: Easy beach access and generally straightforward parking/walking compared with more crowded surf towns

Hazards and notes

• Beach breaks can have shifting sandbars, so conditions change often
• In bigger surf, watch for strong currents and rips
