Cap Ferret Chenal

Cap Ferret Chenal is a surf spot on the Atlantic coast of France, at the tip of the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula in Gironde. It sits near the entrance to the Arcachon Basin (“chenal” = channel), so the spot is strongly influenced by tides, currents, and shifting sandbanks.

• Type: Beach-break / inlet-adjacent sandbar setup
• Wave quality: Can be very good when sandbanks line up, but it’s typically changeable because the channel and bars move around
• Power: Can handle solid Atlantic swell; waves may be hollow and punchy on the right banks
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when conditions are strong and well-shaped

Conditions

• Tide: Highly tide-dependent; often works best around mid tide depending on sand and swell direction
• Swell: Picks up west and northwest Atlantic swell well
• Wind: Best with offshore easterly winds; onshore westerlies can quickly ruin conditions
• Hazards: Strong currents, rips, and moving sandbars; the channel can make paddling and positioning tricky
