Gavres

Gâvres (sometimes spelled Gavres) is a beachbreak surf spot on the south coast of Brittany, France, near Lorient and the entrance to the Ria d’Étel. It’s known for its long sandy beaches, exposed Atlantic swell, and a wide tidal range that can dramatically change the waves.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a sandy beachbreak
• Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers on smaller days; can offer fun, punchy waves for more experienced surfers when the swell is good
• Swell exposure: Picks up Atlantic NW/W swell well
• Wind: Best with offshore east or northeast winds; onshore westerlies can make it messy
• Tide: Very tide-sensitive due to the large tidal range in Brittany. Conditions can change a lot between low and high tide
