Le sillon

Le Sillon is the long, exposed beach break running along the famous embankment in Saint-Malo, Brittany (north coast of France). It’s one of the most well-known surf spots in the area, set on a broad sandy beach with plenty of room and a very scenic backdrop of the old walled city.

Surf characteristics

• Wave type: Mainly a beach break, with shifting sandbanks.
• Best on: It works best on Atlantic swells from the northwest to west.
• Wind: Cleanest with offshore easterly or southeast winds; winds from the west/northwest tend to degrade conditions quickly.
• Size: Can handle anything from small, mellow waves to solid overhead surf during bigger winter swells.
• Consistency: Fairly consistent because of its exposure, though the quality depends a lot on sandbank position.

Conditions and crowd

• Crowd: Popular, especially when conditions are good, because it’s easily accessible and close to town.
• Skill level: Suitable for beginners to intermediate surfers in smaller surf, but bigger winter sessions can be more powerful and better for experienced surfers.
• Hazards: Strong currents, shifting sandbars, and occasional heavy shorebreak when swell is large.

Best season

• Autumn and winter usually bring the best and most powerful surf.
• Spring and summer can still offer fun, smaller waves, especially for longboarding or beginner sessions.

Atmosphere

Le Sillon is known for its iconic setting: long golden sand, the seafront promenade, and views of Saint-Malo’s historic ramparts. It’s as much a scenic beach experience as it is a surf spot.
