Ristna, Hiiumaa Island, Estonia is one of the Baltics’ best-known surf spots, located on the western tip of Hiiumaa Island. It faces the open Baltic Sea, so it catches a lot of swell and wind, making it a favorite for wave surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Spot description

Exposure: Very exposed to west and northwest winds and swell.
Wave quality: Can produce some of the best waves in Estonia, especially during storms or strong low-pressure systems.
Bottom: Typically a sandy beachbreak, so conditions can shift depending on sandbars.
Conditions: Best when the wind and swell align; can be powerful and rough in bigger weather.
Water: Cold most of the year, so thick wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood are often needed.

Wind direction: Usually works well with W, NW, and NNW winds depending on the swell direction and setup.
Season: Most reliable in autumn and winter, when storms bring larger swell.
Skill level: Better for intermediate to advanced surfers on bigger days; more manageable for beginners only when small and clean.
