Gilleleje øst mole

Gilleleje øst mole is a surf spot on the north coast of Zealand, Denmark, at the eastern mole of Gilleleje harbor. It’s a small, exposed North Sea / Kattegat-style beach break and jetty break rather than a classic long-wave point, so conditions can be quite variable and very dependent on swell direction and wind.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly short-period wind swell, with some cleaner surf when the wind and swell line up.
• Best direction: Often works best with northerly to easterly swell and offshore or light cross-off winds from the opposite direction.
• Shape: Can offer quick, punchy waves near the mole, with some protection and structure influence from the harbor wall.
• Power: Usually moderate, but can become more powerful in strong storm-swell events.

Conditions

• Wind sensitivity: Very wind-sensitive; too much wind quickly makes it choppy.
• Tide: Tide effects are usually less dramatic than on larger ocean beaches, but water level can still affect where the waves break around the mole.
• Consistency: Not super consistent, so it’s better when you check forecasts carefully and go during the right swell windows.

Hazards / considerations

• Jetty/mole hazards: Be cautious of rocks, concrete, and submerged structure near the mole.
• Crowds: Can be busy when conditions are decent because it’s a well-known local option.
• Cold water: Denmark water is cold much of the year, so a thick wetsuit is usually needed.
