The Tree

The Tree is a well-known surf spot on Costa Rica’s Pacific South Coast, typically associated with the Dominical / Dominicalito / Uvita area. It’s a reef-and-river-mouth style wave that can offer long, fun rides when conditions line up, and it’s popular with surfers looking for a quality wave away from the more crowded breaks farther north.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a reef break with some shifting sand/river influence depending on swell and season.
• Best on: South to southwest swells generally light it up, and the spot can work best with the right tidal window.
• Wave character: Can range from mellow and playful to fast and hollow when the swell gets bigger.
• Skill level: Usually better for intermediate to advanced surfers, especially if it’s reefy and breaking with power.

Conditions

• Wind: Like much of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, early mornings are often best before onshore winds pick up.
• Seasonality: The green season (roughly May–November) often brings bigger, more consistent swell, while the dry season tends to be smaller but cleaner.
• Crowds: Can be less crowded than famous Central Pacific breaks, but local knowledge and respect go a long way.
