Boca Barranca

Boca Barranca is one of Costa Rica’s most famous longboard waves, located on the Pacific coast near Caldera in the Puntarenas area. It’s a river-mouth point/jetty-style break known for producing exceptionally long, fast, and clean lefts when conditions line up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Long left-hand point break / river-mouth wave
• Best for: Longboarders, experienced shortboarders, and anyone who loves extended rides
• Wave quality: Can be world-class on the right swell, with rides that go on for a very long distance
• Crowd factor: Often crowded when it’s good, especially with locals and longboarders

• Swell direction: Typically works best with south to southwest swells
• Wind: Best with light offshore or calm morning conditions; strong onshore wind can hurt it quickly
• Tide: Tides can matter a lot; conditions vary depending on the river mouth shape and sand movement
• Bottom: A mix influenced by the river mouth and nearby structure, so shape can change over time

Skill level

While it’s famous for mellow, glidey longboard surfing, Boca Barranca is not always beginner-friendly because: - The wave can be fast and powerful - Currents and channel flow near the river mouth can be tricky - Local knowledge helps a lot

The spot is close to Puntarenas / Caldera, making it accessible from Costa Rica’s central Pacific corridor. The surrounding area is more functional than tropical-postcard, but the wave quality can more than make up for it.
