Roca Bruja (Witch’s Rock), Guanacaste, Costa Rica is one of the country’s most iconic surf breaks, located in Santa Rosa National Park on the remote Pacific coast.

What it’s like

Type of break: Primarily a beach break with shifting peaks
Wave quality: Fast, powerful, and often hollow when conditions line up
Best swell: Works best with west to northwest swell
Wind: Typically needs light offshore winds, often from the east or northeast
Skill level: Best for intermediate to advanced surfers because the waves can be strong and the takeoffs steep

Conditions

Roca Bruja can handle a lot of size, and on a good day it offers long, rippable walls and sections for more critical maneuvers. It’s known for being more consistent in the dry season, when offshore winds are more common and the surf is cleaner.

Setting

The spot is famous not just for the waves but also for its spectacular location: rugged coastline, jungle backdrop, and very limited development. Because it’s inside a national park, the area feels wild and relatively untouched.

Access

It’s fairly remote, so access usually involves: - Driving or arranging a 4x4 to the park area - Sometimes a boat or longer overland approach depending on exact conditions and where you’re staying
