Playa Negra

Playa Negra (Guanacaste, Costa Rica) is one of Costa Rica’s most famous reef-and-volcanic-rock surf breaks, known for its powerful, hollow right-hand waves and consistent swell exposure. Located near the town of Los Pargos in the Tamarindo/Playa Avellanas area, it has a laid-back, uncrowded feel compared with some of the more developed beaches nearby.

• Direction: Mostly right-hand point/reef-style wave

Conditions and vibe

Playa Negra is known for being powerful and punchy, with sections that can barrel on the right swell. It’s not usually the best choice for beginners because of the speed, shallow sections, and rocky bottom. When conditions line up, it can produce long, memorable rides with good shape.

The area itself has a quiet, rustic surf-town atmosphere, with plenty of tropical scenery, sunsets, and a more relaxed pace than the busier tourist beaches around Tamarindo.
