Camaronal

Camaronal is a quiet, remote surf spot on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste, best known for its natural beauty, consistency, and uncrowded waves. It sits near the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge, so the vibe is much more raw and nature-focused than a developed surf town.

Surf conditions

• Wave type: Mostly beach break
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, though smaller days can be manageable for beginners
• Consistency: Fairly consistent, with swells from the South and Southwest working well
• Best season: Green season / rainy season and larger south swells, typically May through November
• Tide: Can change a lot with tide; conditions are often best around mid tide
• Waves: Can be powerful and hollow when the swell is up

What it’s like

• Uncrowded: One of the big draws is that it’s usually much less crowded than more famous Costa Rica breaks
• Scenic: Backed by jungle and protected natural area, with a very secluded feel
• Remote: Limited development nearby, so amenities can be sparse
• Wildlife: You may see turtles, birds, and other coastal wildlife, especially because of the refuge

Good to know

• The beach can have strong currents and rips, especially when the surf is larger
• It’s better to go with someone who knows the area, as access and conditions can be a little tricky
• Because it’s remote, it’s smart to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a spare board leash/fin setup
