Hornito

Hornito is a remote surf spot in northern Chile, in the Antofagasta region, known for its desert-meets-ocean scenery and powerful Pacific swell. It sits along a rugged, sparsely populated stretch of coastline, so the vibe is quiet and raw rather than crowded or developed.

What it’s like

• Type of wave: Typically a rocky-point or reef-type break with a more serious feel than a casual beach break.
• Wave quality: When conditions line up, Hornito can produce clean, fast, and well-shaped waves, especially on a good swell and favorable wind.
• Consistency: It’s not a super-consistent everyday wave; it tends to work best with the right swell direction, tide, and wind.
• Crowds: Usually very uncrowded, partly because of its remote location and the more demanding conditions.

Conditions

• Water temperature: Cold to cool, depending on the season, so a wetsuit is generally needed.
• Wind: Like much of northern Chile, it can be affected by coastal wind patterns, so early sessions are often best.
• Best season: Generally the southern hemisphere winter swell season can deliver stronger surf, though local conditions matter a lot.
