Benijo is one of Tenerife’s most dramatic and wild surf spots, located on the island’s northeast coast in the Anaga area. It’s known for its rugged volcanic scenery, black-sand shoreline, and powerful Atlantic exposure.

Surf characteristics

Direction: Works best on northerly to northwesterly swells
Wind: Cleanest in southerly or offshore winds
Level: Generally intermediate to advanced
Best for: Confident surfers who can handle strong currents, powerful surf, and shallow sections

What to expect

Benijo can produce fast, hollow waves when conditions line up, but it’s not the most forgiving spot. The waves can be punchy and inconsistent, and the surrounding rocks mean you need to be careful when entering and exiting the water. At bigger sizes, it can become challenging and hazardous.

Setting

One of the biggest draws of Benijo is the scenery: steep cliffs, remote natural surroundings, and a raw ocean feel. It’s a beautiful place to surf, but also one of the more exposed and serious breaks on Tenerife.
