San Juan

San Juan (Lanzarote, Canary Islands) is a well-known surf spot on the northwest coast of Lanzarote, usually considered part of the La Santa / Famara area. It’s a powerful reef break with a reputation for offering fast, hollow waves and a more advanced surf experience.

What it’s like

San Juan tends to produce clean, punchy right-hand waves and can get very good on a solid northwest swell. When it’s smaller, it may be more manageable, but when the swell picks up, the wave becomes heavy and challenging, especially because of the reef and the power of the Atlantic swells that hit Lanzarote.

Best conditions

• Swell: NW, NNW, or N
• Wind: East or southeast offshore
• Tide: Often depends on the bank/reef section, but mid tide is commonly a safe bet
• Size: Works from small to well overhead, though bigger days are for experienced surfers only
