Caleta de caballo

Caleta de Caballo is a small, quiet surf spot on the northwest coast of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, near La Santa. It’s known for its raw Atlantic exposure, volcanic scenery, and relatively uncrowded lineup compared with more famous breaks on the island.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly a reef break with powerful, fast waves.
• Best conditions: Typically works best with NW to N swells and favorable winds, often with light easterly/offshore winds.
• Difficulty: Generally suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on the swell size and tide.
• Hazards: Sharp volcanic reef, strong currents, and a potentially heavy takeoff.

Spot feel

• The setting is wild and scenic, with black volcanic rock, open ocean views, and a very natural, rugged atmosphere.
• It’s less developed and more local-feeling than some of the better-known surf areas on Lanzarote.

Practical notes

• Tide and swell matter a lot here; the wave can change significantly with the conditions.
• Because it’s a reef break, it’s wise to check the spot at low risk before paddling out.
• Bring reef-safe boots if you prefer extra protection, since the volcanic reef can be sharp.
