Mejillones

Mejillones (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands) is a righthand reef / reefy point-style wave on the island’s north or northeast-facing coast, depending on swell and conditions. It’s known more as a quality local surf spot than a beginner-friendly beach break.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Fast, hollow reef break with sections that can run down the line
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
• Difficulty: Can be challenging because of the reef, power, and sometimes shallow takeoff zone
• Conditions: Works best with a solid swell and favorable wind, often when the trade winds are light or offshore

Surf characteristics

• Shape: Can offer a clean, peeling wall on the right setup
• Power: Punchy and energetic, especially on bigger swells
• Bottom: Reef, so wave quality can be excellent but wipeouts can be rough
• Crowd: Usually less mellow than beginner spots; locals may surf it regularly

When to surf it

• Swell: Needs enough swell to activate the reef properly
• Wind: Offshore or light winds are ideal
• Tide: Tide sensitivity matters a lot on reef breaks; mid-tide is often the safest bet, but this can vary

Things to keep in mind

• Reef exposure: Be careful with the bottom, especially at lower tide
• Conditions can change fast: Fuerteventura can go from manageable to heavy quickly
