Mambucaba

Mambucaba is a surf spot on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro state, in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, not in Rio de Janeiro city itself. It sits near the mouth of the Mambucaba River, between wooded hills and a long stretch of coastline along the Costa Verde.

Surf characteristics

• Wave type: Mostly beachbreak with shifting sandbars, though the river mouth can affect shape and currents.
• Wave quality: Can be fun and punchy when a swell lines up, but it’s generally a localized, changeable beachbreak rather than a world-class reef or point break.
• Best swell: Works best with south or southeast swells, which are more common on this coast.
• Wind: Offshore northwest winds tend to clean it up; onshore east/northeast winds can make it messy.
• Skill level: Usually suitable for beginner to intermediate surfers, though stronger conditions and currents near the river mouth can challenge less experienced surfers.

Conditions and environment

• The spot is influenced by the river outflow, which can alter sandbars, water quality after heavy rain, and current strength.
• It can be less consistent than more exposed breaks, but when sandbars align, it can produce enjoyable peaks.
• The setting is scenic, with lush Atlantic Forest surroundings and relatively warm water compared with southern Brazil.

• Be cautious of strong currents, especially near the river mouth.
• After heavy rainfall, water quality may drop due to runoff.
• Like many Brazilian beachbreaks, the wave shape can change a lot with the season and sand movement.
