Araruna

Araruna, Pará, Brazil is a lesser-known surf destination in the Brazilian Amazon region, on the Atlantic side of northern Brazil. Like much of Pará’s coastline, the surf scene is shaped by strong tides, river influence, and powerful swell rather than the classic tropical reef setup found farther south.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Typically sandbar-driven beachbreaks or river-mouth influenced waves, depending on the exact stretch of coast.
• Conditions: Can be fast, punchy, and inconsistent, with quality often tied to swell size, wind direction, and tidal movement.
• Water: Warm tropical water year-round.
• Crowds: Usually light compared with Brazil’s famous surf hubs, since this region is remote and less developed for surf tourism.

Best time to surf

• The northern Brazilian coast generally gets its best surf from the rainy season into the stronger swell periods, often roughly December to May, though local conditions can vary a lot.
• Tides matter a lot—many spots in Pará work best on a specific tide window.

Atmosphere

• Expect a wild, undeveloped coastline with mangroves, river systems, and strong natural influence.
• Travel can be more adventurous than at mainstream surf towns, and local knowledge is very valuable.
