Morro das Pedras is a well-known surf spot on the southern coast of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. It’s a scenic beach break with a more exposed, ocean-facing setup than many of the city’s calmer beaches, so it tends to pick up solid swell and can offer powerful, punchy waves.

Surf profile

  • Wave type: Beach break, with shifting peaks
  • Best swell: South and southeast swells
  • Wind: Offshore with northwest winds; can be affected by strong onshore winds from the east/northeast
  • Skill level: Best for intermediate to advanced surfers when it’s bigger and more powerful
  • Wave character: Can be fast and hollow at times, especially when the sandbanks line up well

Conditions

Morro das Pedras often works best when there’s enough swell to activate the beachbreak peaks, but not so much that it becomes overly disorganized. Because the sandbanks move around, conditions can change frequently from session to session. On the right day, it can produce fun, quality rights and lefts with some size and speed.

Atmosphere

The spot is set in a beautiful natural area with a more local, laid-back vibe compared to some of Florianópolis’ more crowded surf beaches. It’s close to other famous southern island breaks, making it a good part of a surf road trip around the island.

Notes

  • Can get crowded when conditions are good
  • Strong currents may appear on bigger swells
  • Worth checking the forecast and local wind direction before going
