Mocambique

Mocambique is one of Florianópolis’ longest and most natural beachbreaks, located on the island’s northeastern coast in a protected area with a more untouched feel than many of the city’s busier surf beaches.

Surf character

• Type: Beachbreak with shifting sandbanks
• Wave quality: Can be very good when the sand lines up, producing fast, hollow, powerful waves
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when it gets bigger or more organized
• Consistency: Fairly reliable by Florianópolis standards, but conditions depend heavily on swell direction, wind, and sand movement

What it’s like

Mocambique is known for its long stretch of sand and more open exposure to the Atlantic, which means it can pick up a lot of swell. On the right day it offers long walls and barreling sections, but it can also get bumpy and heavy when the wind or swell isn’t ideal.

Because it’s less urbanized and more natural, the vibe is usually more relaxed and spacious than at the island’s more famous city beaches.

• Best swell: South and southeast swell
• Best wind: Light offshore or calm conditions; strong onshore winds can hurt quality quickly
• Tide: Often tide-sensitive, with different peaks working better at different stages depending on sandbars

• Heavy surf on larger days
• Shifting sandbars and uneven takeoff zones
• Can be crowded when conditions are good, though it still feels less packed than some central beaches

Mocambique is a classic Florianópolis beachbreak: wild, scenic, and capable of producing excellent waves when the sand and swell align. It’s a spot that rewards patience and local knowledge, and it’s especially appealing if you like a more natural setting with serious surf potential.
