Santa Iria

Santa Iria is one of the standout surf spots on São Miguel Island in the Azores’ Eastern Group. It sits on the north coast, exposed to the Atlantic, and offers a scenic, rugged backdrop with steep green cliffs and black volcanic rock.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Usually a fast, powerful reef break with a hollow to punchy feel.
• Direction: Works best on north/northwest swells.
• Wind: Best with southerly winds or light/offshore conditions.
• Bottom: Reef/volcanic rock, so it’s a serious spot and requires careful entry/exit.
• Skill level: Generally intermediate to advanced due to power, shallowness, and local hazards.

Conditions

• Can produce quality barrels and clean walls when the swell lines up.
• Often best on mid to larger swells; too much size can make it heavy and tricky.
• Tides matter: the wave can be quite different at low vs. mid/high tide, and local knowledge helps a lot.

Vibe and setting

• The setting is one of the biggest draws: dramatic Atlantic coastline, lush hills, and remote feel.
• Because of the exposed location and rocky access, it’s less of a casual beach break and more of a committed surf mission.
• On good days, it can be one of the most rewarding waves in São Miguel.
