Rabo de Peixe (São Miguel, Azores) — surf spot description
Rabo de Peixe is a powerful North Shore-style wave on São Miguel Island in the Azores’ Eastern group. It’s one of the better-known surf spots in the archipelago, offering a raw Atlantic setup with plenty of energy when swell lines up. The wave is exposed to the North Atlantic, so it can deliver heavy, fast, and hollow sections, especially on the right swell direction and tide.
Wave type
- Reef/point-style wave with a fairly committed takeoff
- Can offer lefts and rights, depending on the exact peak and conditions
- Best known for strong, punchy waves rather than long mellow rides
Conditions
- Works best with consistent NW to N swell
- Offshore winds are typically from the south/southeast
- Can get very solid and powerful, especially in winter
- Best for intermediate to advanced surfers, and advanced surfers on bigger days
Hazards
- Reef/rocky bottom
- Strong currents and shallow sections
- Can be unforgiving at larger sizes
- Local conditions can change quickly due to Atlantic weather systems
Atmosphere
Rabo de Peixe has a more rugged, local, and authentic feel than a polished beachbreak destination. The setting is dramatic, with the lush green Azorean coastline and dark volcanic rock adding to the experience.
Best for
- Surfers looking for real Atlantic power
- Those comfortable with reef breaks
- Experienced surfers traveling through São Miguel in search of quality waves
